Special Service Days

Throughout the year at Mars Hill, we have many special services. Sometimes we change the date and times of these events or sometimes we decide to go in different directions, these are the services we have traditionally celebrated.

Baptist Men’s Day

When is it held?

  • The Fourth Sunday of January

What is it?

  • We use this day to remind our congregation of the importance of Baptist Men’s ministry within the church, community, and the world. We also celebrate this day by asking our men to take the place of our choir and provide special music for the morning worship service.

How can I help?

  • If you are a guy and would like to be part of the choir for Baptist men’s day you are more than welcome to join. The men usually practice before the service, immediately after Sunday school in the choir room.

Palm Sunday / Fellowship Meal

Easter Egg Hunt

When is it held?

  • Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter)

What is it?

  • Each Palm Sunday the church has a potluck fellowship meal immediately following the Sunday morning service. After the meal the children are gathered together and we have an easter egg hunt on the church grounds.

How can I help?

  • You can help by bringing your favorite covered dish to share during the fellowship meal and/or bring prepackaged Easter eggs for the Easter egg hunt. The youth usually hide the eggs after meal so youth are encouraged to be part of this tradition.

Easter Cantata (Choir)

When is it held?

  • Every other year on Easter Sunday
    (Even years)

What is it?

  • Every other year our choir practices and performs a selected Easter cantata for the church on Easter Sunday. The cantata usually lasts for almost the entire service.

How can I help?

  • The choir is always looking for new members!

Maundy Thursday Service
(Lord’s Supper Dramatization)

When is it held?

  • Every other year on Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter Sunday)

What is it?

  • Every other year our men perform a dramatized version of the Last Supper as recorded in the Gospel accounts. This is a moving service of the Last Supper as Christ institutes communion, gives final instructions to His disciples, and washes their feet. No two services are exactly the same as different music, choir performances, and other interactions change each time it is performed. In off years a special service is held at the church on Maundy Thursday.

  • Maundy Thursday is the Christian holy day falling on the Thursday before Easter. It commemorates the Maundy (Latin mandatum or mandate) and the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. One of the definitions of the word Maundy is that it means “command”. This meaning refers to the command that Jesus gave to his own disciples that they should love and serve one another.

How can I help?

  • Men who are willing to volunteer to play the various parts are always welcome. There is usually one good rehearsal before the actual performance and help is always needed to set up the stage and to break everything down afterwards.

Mother’s Day Service

When is it held?

  • The second Sunday in May (Mother’s day)

What is it?

  • A service where we acknowledge and thank our mothers for all their service and love they show throughout the year. Usually the music and sermon is Mother’s Day themed.

Homecoming

When is it held?

  • The fourth Sunday in May

What is it?

  • This is a time we celebrate the anniversary of our church’s founding. It is a chance for old members to come back and reunite with friends and family and gives the church a chance to reflect on our past and look forward to our future. Usually a guest speaker is invited to deliver the sermon and special music is provided by the church and church members. Afterwards we have potluck fellowship meal on the grounds.

How can I help?

  • You can bring your favorite dish to share in the meal afterwards.

Memorial Day /
Graduation Sunday

When is it held?

  • The last Sunday in May

What is it?

  • This is a where we acknowledge our High School graduates and present them with a small gift commending them on their accomplishments. In this service we also acknowledge and honor those who gave their life in the service of our country.

How can I help?

  • Letting the pastor and youth directors know about those who will be graduating as well as letting the pastor know of any family member who passed away in military service would be greatly appreciated.

Father’s Day Service

When is it held?

  • The Third Sunday of June

Wednesday Night Thanksgiving

Praise Service and Dinner

When is it held?

  • The Wednesday Night that is 8 days before Thanksgiving

What is it?

  • On this Wednesday night the church gathers in the fellowship hall for a potluck meal, usually at 6:30pm. We eat together and then move to the sanctuary at about 7pm and have a special service wherein we are able to stand give thanks to God for all the blessings He has given to us over the past year. This is a moving service as we hear about all of what God has done through the lives of others. The service usually lasts about an hour.

How can I help?

  • All are encouraged to bring their favorite dish to share at the potluck meal and to give testimony in the service. There is always a need in setting up and in cleaning up the fellowship hall.

Candlelight Lord’s Supper at Christmas

When is it held?

  • The Wednesday Night before Christmas Eve

What is it?

  • This is a special Wednesday evening service where the church gathers and hears a special Christmas themed message, partakes of communion together, and also has a ceremony of lighting candles together as a church symbolizing the light of the world coming into the world as He did at Christmas. The service is usually held at 7pm and lasts about an hour.

How can I help?

  • Please come and be part and be blessed by this special service.

Children’s Day at Christmas (Christmas Play)

When is it held?

  • Usually the Sunday before Christmas Eve

What is it?

  • Each year our children rehearse and put on a Christmas play. These change from year to year and are a blessing to see. They practice for many weeks beforehand on Wednesday evenings from 7-8pm and the Saturday morning prior to the Christmas play. They perform the play during the morning worship time. Usually this is the Sunday before Christmas.

How can I help?

  • There is a huge amount of help that is needed to make this event of success. There are sets to be built, costumes to be made, rehearsals to be watched over, and decorations that have to be hung. Any help that can be given is greatly appreciated.

What is it?

How can I help?

  • The choir is always looking for new members and everyone is encouraged to bring a tasty dessert for afterwards.
