At Mars Hill, during the service, there is a reading of a Scripture as our service begins (The Call to Worship), before the offering (Offertory Scripture), and to close our service (The Benediction). I know many churches are in this practice and want to incorporate a diversity of relevant verses therefore I’ve decided to post the list that is currently in use at Mars Hill. If your church uses any that are not listed here please feel free to post a comment at the end, listing the Scripture and where it is used in your services.
How the Scriptures are Used in a Typical Service at Mars Hill Baptist Church
Call to Worship – used at the start of the service to praise God and encourage others to worship the Lord, hence a call to worship.
Offertory Scripture – Read right before our offertory prayer. These are verses to remind us of the blessedness of giving, the worthiness of God to receive our gifts, and our responsibility to honor God with the fruits of our labor.
Benediction – this is our closing Scripture, this can be a promise of Scripture, an encouragement to the congregation of God’s blessing and care, a general call to go out into the world and to share God’s love and message to all the world, or a praise to God for Who He is and what He has done.
